Bridges & Modems

A Bridge

A bridge operates at data link layer. A bridge is a repeater, with add on functionality of filtering content by reading the MAC addresses of source and destination. It is also used for interconnecting two LANs working on the same protocol. It has a single input and single output port, thus making it a 2-port device. The device that can be used to interconnect two separate LANs is known as a bridge. It is commonly used to connect two similar or dissimilar LANs.
Bridges operate at the Data-Link Layer of the OSI Model. They can distinguish between local and remote data, so data traveling from one workstation to another in the same segment doesn’t have to cross the bridge.
Bridges operate on MAC-Layer addresses. They’re protocol independent, so they transfer data between workstations without having to understand the protocol. That means they require little or no configuration.

Modems
Modems and routers are both essential devices for connecting to the internet. Many people mistake the two because they both have blinking lights on the front and Ethernet ports on the back. However, modems and routers perform very different functions.
The Internet is accessed through a cable modem. A cable modem is a hardware device that connects your computer devices to your Internet service provider over a coax cable (ISP). Analog modems (dial-up), digital subscriber line (DSL), and cable modems are the three types of modems available. You can get away with merely having a modem if you only have one device that needs to connect to the Internet, such as a PC or laptop. However, if you have many devices or wish to use them wirelessly (WiFi), you’ll need a router.
Do You Need A Modem & A Router?
If you wish to use WiFi or connect numerous devices, you’ll need both a modem and a router. You can only connect one computer at a time because most modems only have one LAN Ethernet connector, but a modem won’t provide the same level of protection as a router. If you have multiple devices that need to connect to the Internet, you’ll need a router. However, a router by itself will not allow you to connect to the Internet. A router must be connected to the modem to distribute the internet connection to your devices. Some devices combine the tasks of a modem and a router these days. As a result, you won’t need to purchase a separate modem and router while setting up your home internet connection.
Combination Modem-Routers
These days, many LAN set-ups cut out the connection between modem and router by combining the functions of both into a single piece of equipment, sometimes known as a gateway.
Using a combined modem-router simplifies the entire set-up and reduces the amount of cabling needed. Combined units are often the preferred choice for home networks, but their limited features and lack of adaptability means they’re not suited to more advanced networking.
Factors To Consider When Choosing a Modem
