Developed by Intel Corporation, the Peripheral Component Interconnect standard (PCI) is an industry-standard, high-speed bus found in nearly all desktop computers. PCI slots allow you to install a wide variety of expansion cards including:
Graphics or Video cards
Sound cards

Many other types of cards
Furthermore, PCI automatically configures cards to work properly with other PCI cards in any computer.
PCI cards come in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, as well as both 33 MHz and 66 MHz speeds.
The best thing about PCI is that it allows you to interchange some computer parts. For example, in case you are in need of a better graphics card, you can simply remove the old one and plug in the graphics card you desire.
On the computer’s motherboard, there are mainly two different types of Expansion Slots are available. PCIe
PCIe (PCI Express®) is the more recently introduced standard for connecting devices to computers. It’s software-compatible with PCI but has higher potential bandwidth and greater flexibility than PCI. The PCIe specification is also maintained by the PCI-SIG.
Basically PCIe or Peripheral Component Interconnect Express is a type of interface that allows high-speed components like graphics cards, SSDs, and WiFi cards to connect to your computer. Typical PCIe connectors take the form of expansion slots on the motherboard, allowing you to physically attach a supported device.
PCIe Lanes
PCIe lanes are the physical link between the PCIe-supported device and the processor/chipset. PCIe lanes consist of two pairs of copper wires, typically known as traces, that run through the motherboard PCB, connecting the PCIe-enabled device to either the processor or motherboard chipset. You can think of a single PCIe lane as a highway where the vehicles (data here) travel in both directions (to and fro) simultaneously. Up to 32 of these bidirectional PCIe lanes can be allotted to a single device, enabling it to achieve a high-bandwidth, low-latency transfer of data.
