Time Servers

Time servers are a type of server computer. These server computers will read the actual time from a reference clock, typically a GPS clock due to their high accuracy, and distribute that information through a computer network. This information keeps all timekeepers and clocks within the network properly synced. NTP network time servers, a specific type of time server, use Network Time Protocol, one of the oldest Internet protocols still in use today.
The Time Server needs a reference clock that defines the true time, as reference it uses the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) without offset. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. It is one of several closely related successors to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). UTC can be used everywhere in the world, meaning that it is independent from time zones (i.e., it is not local time). The clients receive the UTC time without offset from the network time server. To convert UTC to local time (UTC+offset), the clients would have to add or subtract the local time zone.

Time Server Protocols

NTP
The network time protocol (NTP) is the most often used network clock synchronization protocol in software synchronization, and it is well suited to large networks. High precision time is one of the most important business requirements as well as an important challenge. The Network time protocol (NTP) is a time synchronization protocol that is used to deal with the issue of high precision. It is a protocol that is used to synchronize the time of a computer that is located in a different geographical location on the internet in order to keep the same time.
With the rapid development of computer technology, accurate time synchronization is required in all fields, and there are three-time synchronization methods:
SNTP
The SNTP method is much simpler than the NTP, given that it bypasses various steps and only periodically adjusts the time, obtaining less accuracy. The contents of the packet through which it communicates with the server omit many of the functionalities of the NTP procedure. The use of the SNTP protocol as a main source or clock is not recommended.
The use of the SNTP protocol is interesting in the following cases:
PTP
PTP (Precision Time Protocol) is completely defined in IEEE standard 1588. It’s a very accurate and scalable time source that can support a wide range of networked equipment. It was created for systems that require the highest level of precision.
Unlike NTP and SNTP, in the PTP protocol the connection begins with a server request. This protocol is meant to be used in local networks and industrial devices. Another difference compared to the other two protocols is that, in order to use this algorithm, specific hardware is required. Furthermore, at this time there are no free PTP servers, therefore it is necessary to either pay to use this source or have a main server within the installation.
